One of my favorites since childhood are the serene vet stories of James Herriot. And although I actually prefer reading to watching movies as I can not decide what I like better me in this case: the books or the movie.
England, in the late 30s: the young James is happy with the offer to be able to work in Yorkshire in the practice of a country veterinarian. Committed he throws himself into every adventure that holds this job for him. Here it his boss and later partner Siegfried support in a peculiar way. After Siegfried is moody and unpredictable, chaotic in a sympathetic way and yet the most reliable friend a man could ask for. Besides, there is Tristan, Siegfried's much younger brother, who sunk despite brilliant skills of each exam, diligently and unsuccessfully runs after every skirt and preserves the local taverns to bankruptcy. The three of them take care of every animal that gets in their nose - to wild bulls just like to pet dogs and decrepit budgies.
The story begins before 2 World War II, makes the war years a little break, because the three vets let bygones be practical and serve in the army, and begins immediately after the war again. It paints joe cartoon games a clear picture of life in rural Yorkshire at that time.
The largely autobiographical story of veterinarian James Alfred Wight (1916 - 1995) appeared joe cartoon games in several volumes, compiled in the German edition, strangely, unlike in the original English. The stories were filmed in a total of seven seasons joe cartoon games and three movies (the "Christmas Specials").
Here I would like to start with the books, even though as a child I first saw the first season of filming, before we got the first book: Because these books I have read over and over again in the last 30 years. They are loyal companions for cloudy days when I have a cold or other reasons'm in need of comfort. Written in beautiful language (both English and German), they describe detailed and lovingly veterinary everyday at a time in which there were no effective antibiotics, but span-prone cars. You can tell the author his enthusiasm: for his work, the landscape in which it has brought him, and the peculiar population with which he gets to do it. You take it from him that he sometimes can not sleep with worry about an animal that is not even his own. In these books I woke at that time the desire joe cartoon games to be a veterinarian. When I looked joe cartoon games into it a few years later again, I took the books because then distance from this career choice - I was in fact clear that this is not a job for someone who does not do not hesitate to get dirty. Despite the beautiful descriptions that includes the book, but nothing is transfigured: Animals can die and shit stinks.
The films are for me the books in nothing: Highly detailed and accurate in the equipment, with beautiful joe cartoon games landscapes and magnificent old cars. The cast could not be more appropriate. This is all the more surprising that the film Siegfried the book Siegfried is outwardly very dissimilar: If the practice joe cartoon games head described in the book as tall and thin, with a mustache and carelessly dressed, the actor Robert Hardy is rather small, strong, clean-shaven and always accurately combed. And yet there could be no one better to represent the choleric Siegfried. joe cartoon games When Robert Hardy frowns, his glasses from his nose crack and holds one of the absurdly comical lectures, joe cartoon games which are characterized Siegfried, one fears for his health. Fortunately, these efforts Robert Hardy did not harm so that he could give the Minister joe cartoon games of Magic Cornelius Fudge 82 years. Chapeau, Mr. Hardy. The role of the inexperienced and often somewhat clumsy James took over suitable Christopher Timothy. The many other characters fit into the image that one makes when reading them.
I had to smile again and again over the role that was granted to women in the series. I assume that this representation is very realistic. joe cartoon games But someone like me, who does prefer to steer clear of any dust cloth can just hard to imagine that someone can throw with such verve in the housework as James wife Helen.
And a D
