We meet the first fairy Maleficent as young and good-hearted girl who flies around disney art and enjoys life in the enchanted forest. There is a consensus, after previous wars, between forest creatures and the people who live in a kingdom bordering the forest, to the effect that they do not interfere with each other. One day, a human boy to the forest to steal gems but Maleficent stops him and the two fall in love. Unfortunately, they glide apart in adolescence, she becomes first patron of the forest while he is hungry for power and wealth in the human kingdom.
When the human kingdom king decides to plunder the forest kingdom, he is hindered by Maleficent. I do not want "spoila" details but the king then put a price on Maleficents head and soon the war started, something that becomes the starting point of our main person's journey to go from being good to being the evil fairy who we recognize from previous versions of the tale of Sleeping Beauty.
Angelina Jolie is perfect in the lead role which is strong, both in appearance and behavior, inspired by the villain of the same name in Disney cartoon Sleeping Beauty disney art of 1959 (which in turn is based on a folk tale made famous by all the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault). The rest of the acting ensemble, with interesting names such as Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley and Sam Riley, pales in comparison and may find themselves in this film mainly belongs to Jolie. Jolie's balancing between being a protagonist and antagonist is stylish and anchor the film in a way that is necessary for it to work.
To be a movie that turns upside-down on the previous "truths" in the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty becomes the movie, while watching it, predictable, this is mainly due to trainer. It's clear that director Robert Stromberg is debutant (the film is the most expensive ever for a debut director) and feel more at home in the visuals, he is known as a production designer for films such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, than things that tell tempo and personal trainer. The film's middle portion is sloppily told and becomes disney art a tough haul between the squeaky introduction and the satisfactory disney art resolution.
The screenplay, by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland), is one of the most interesting in the film and is full of interesting criticism of warmongering, greed and power thirst. Of all the most interesting is how the film discusses patriarchy and matriarchy and ask relevant questions, something that makes you interpret the film as an allegory for the real world and find clever subversive critique of the male-dominated society that we live in. To get this into a fairytale movie mainly aimed at a family audience is neat. The way it is done is intelligent implicit and does not remove from the film's ability to entertain as escapism.
The small flaws notwithstanding so adjoins this redefinition of the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty into an even higher grade. Maleficent is visually disney art lovely sommarbiounderhållning disney art suitable for both young people and adults with its mix of thought-provoking ideas and visual treats.
